My father
Gilbert
My father Gilbert was born to Ildefonso and Margarita Sanchez on October 29,1934, in San Antonio, Texas. He is the youngest of the five Sanchez children. He had three sisters and one brother. They brought him home to a house on West Laurel Avenue in San Antonio. This would not be his home for long. The family moved to Los Angeles, California around 1935-36. His father had left Texas for California the previous year to seek employment. They moved into a house on East 64th Street in Los Angeles. The family stayed in that house until the moved to Huntington Park in the mid 50’s.
The house on E. 64 St. would be his home throughout his childhood, Gilbert attended 66th Street Elementary K-6 and them moved on to Edison Jr. High. It was there that he became friends with Jerry Patterson ( Jerry would later marry Gil’s sister Angie around 1959). After junior high, Gil attended Fremont High School. Graduating in about 1952.
My dad worked for the Western Electric after high School. He served in the Army from approximately 1957-59. My dad and mom (Ada Bladh) married in 1957, and had me in 1959. In 1962, my dad moved our family into our new house at 9200 Tarryton Avenue in Whittier. The house was perfect to grow up in as it was a corner lot and had tons of yard to run amok in . The backyard originally had two avocado trees, two lemon trees, a plum tree and an apricot tree.
My dad remain in Whittier while I moved on; however, he did live in La Mirada for a handful of years when he got married again, this time to Carmen. After their divorce he returned and stayed in the Whittier home until Sydney Rose was born and then he moved up to Ventura to be close to my family in 1995 where he remains.
We share a duplex at the beach with me upstairs where Sydney was raised, and he downstairs readily available to help out at a moment’s notice.
